Company History
In 1936, Davre Davidson began selling peanuts out of his old Dodge in Los Angeles, and it laid the foundation for what would eventually become the standard in service excellence, Aramark. In 1945, Davre Davidson and his brother, Henry, run Davidson Brothers, one of the largest vending companies in California.
In 1959, the Davidson brothers and William Fishman combine their vending companies to create Automatic Retailers of America, or ARA.
In 1961, we stunned the food service industry by acquiring a much larger food service company, Slater System, Inc., and moved our headquarters to Philadelphia.
In 1968, we were awarded the food service contract for the first of many Olympic Games and served over 10,000 athletes, fans and officials in Mexico City, Mexico. Back at home, stadiums, national parks and convention centers across the U.S. hungered for a solution to their food service needs. We also entered our first domestic partnership at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium (now Turner Field).
In 1969, we transform from ARA to ARA Services.
In 1972, we broke into the European market by acquiring Eurovend NV, giving us food service capabilities in the UK, France, Germany and Belgium.
In 1976, a joint venture with Mitsui & Co. Ltd. positions us in Japan. That same year, we entered the work uniform rental and career apparel industry.
In 1990, we continued to expand into the former East Germany, establishing contracts in Hungary and the former Czechoslovakia, and expanding existing business in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, and Japan.
Finally, in 1994, we evolve from ARA Services into Aramark to reflect the change in our business relationships and our commitment to serving customers with passion.
